New report on the prospects for the development of the Polish defence industry

The deteriorating security environment of Poland, rapid growth in defence spending and the need to seek new drivers for the economy call for urgent and in-depth reflection on the prospects for the Polish defence industry. The Eastern Flank Institute and the Sobieski Institute have jointly taken up this challenge.

The analytical report entitled ‘How to go from being an arms importer to a security exporter? Prospects for the development of the Polish defence industry’ is the result of joint work by experts representing both organisations. The authors of the report conducted a cross-sectional analysis of the conditions for the development of the sector, taking into account the challenges facing Polish defence policy and the development model, the history of the domestic industry to date, and selected case studies, including Israel, France, South Korea, Norway, the United States and Turkey.

Their research resulted in a set of realistic recommendations aimed at:

  • increasing the level of innovation in the Polish arms industry;
  • dynamically increasing the degree of Polishisation of the Polish Armed Forces’ armaments and effectively increasing the sovereignty of the Republic of Poland;
  • increasing the efficiency of the domestic defence industry, both state-owned and private;
  • shifting a significant part of the growing defence expenditure to investments in the national economy and the creation of high-value jobs in Poland.
